The following are guidelines based on pool size. However, pump sizing is not "one size fits all". A circulation pump's capacity has to take into account not only the pool size, but other factors that impact its operation such as: the total amount of pool piping; elevation changes between pool & equipment pad; presence of water features, spas and/or other pool equipment / booster pumps. For example, greater pump capacity is required for pool equipment that is far away from the pool, pools that have waterfalls, or pools that use pressure-side sweepers.
If comparing the horsepower of an older single-speed pump to a new variable-speed (VS) pump, the recommended total horsepower of VS pump is typically going to be higher. VS pumps are intended to utilize a small portion of their total capacity and allow longer run times and greater circulation, while using less energy.
Typical Pump Sizing:
- SF1.5P, Capacity: 5-20,000 gallons*
- SF2.0P, Capacity: 10-35,000 gallons*
- SF3.0P, Capacity: 15-50,000 gallons*
Large pools may utilize two or more circulation pumps.
