First Steps

  1. Perform a full water chemistry test for these standard levels:
    • FC, CC, TC, pH, CYA, CA, Salinity, Alkalinity, Phosphates, Nitrates, Metals, Saturation Index
    • Ensure test results are from the last 24 hours, compare to results from previous weeks.
  2. Double check these common issues:
    • Check that your salinity is in range, ideally 3500ppm
    • Clean your cell thoroughly follow the manual's instructions - do this , or until no more "fizzing" occurs after new cleaning solution is added inside the cell.
    • Confirm that input power is present and check that all cables are fully connected.
  3. Restart your unit by turning it off and on, raising its chlorine output level to 100%. Allow it to run at least 5 minutes before proceeding with troubleshooting diagnostics.

Common Questions

Q:Is this a 110v unit?

Asked by: Tom Gurchick - 2/12/2022
A: It can be used with both 110 and 220 volts. The SJA models are dual voltage and automatically work with whichever of the two are supplied.

Q:Only number two polarity comes on

Asked by: Simone Robert - 2/12/2022
A: The system will automatically switch polarities every six hours of run time. The system can not get "stuck" on one polarity. There is nothing you need to check or monitor with the polarity.

Q:Why is my Salt LED off (not red/green off)? Thanks.

Asked by: Greg - 2/12/2022
A: Those lights are not always on depending on the system's duty cycle. This is also common to see when you first turn the unit on, and when you make a change to the unit's output.

Q:Can I use this unit with a variable speed (vs) pump? If so what rpm and duration settings should I use?

Asked by: Bob - 2/12/2022
A: Yes, this model has a flow switch that helps ensure it runs in sync with a programmable VS pump. Pump RPM and duration is 100% unique to the way your pool equipment is set up and the needs of the pool. Generally speaking, any pump needs to "turnover" all the water through the pool through the filter 1.5 - 2x per day. How that is achieved will depend on the pump's performance, the "head" or effort required to move the water through your unique setup, etc...

Q:I have a new variable speed pump. the new SJ-35 Gen 2 has a flow switch. what is the minimum or recommended flow rate and what RPM speed with that be on a 1.5hp pump

Asked by: Greg - 2/12/2022
A: A typical guideline for salt chlorinators is 20-30gpm flow, however that is only one part of the consideration. The main goal is to make sure your cell stays 100% filled with water; since the cell is clear this is easy to confirm. Similarly, an RPM does not give the same flow rate on everyone's pool - it depends on your pool's unique Total Dynamic Head, or resistance to flow, roughly. You can utilize a pool flow meter, or simply turn down your pump and check the cell after a couple hours of low speed operation to ensure that your flow is not allowing any air or gas to buildup in the cell.

Q:Can this be wired to a constant electrical supply when using a variable speed pump?

Asked by: Christopher - 2/12/2022
A: Yes, in this circumstance the system's flow switch will activate/deactivate it.

Q:How easy are is the SJ 35 to clean and how often does it need cleaning?

Asked by: James Ballard - 2/12/2022
A: The SJ models are especially easy to clean, and are also one of the few models that don't require acid to clean. You simply unscrew its cell and slide its included cleaning tool between the titanium plates. Cleaning frequency is the same between salt system models, and is dependent upon your water chemistry. For most people it is seasonal.
