First Steps

  1. Perform a full water chemistry test for these standard levels:
    • FC, CC, TC, pH, CYA, CA, Salinity, Alkalinity, Phosphates, Nitrates, Metals, Saturation Index
    • Ensure test results are from the last 24 hours, compare to results from previous weeks.
  2. Double check these common issues:
    • Check that your salinity is in range, ideally 3500ppm
    • Clean your cell thoroughly follow the manual's instructions - do this , or until no more "fizzing" occurs after new cleaning solution is added inside the cell.
    • Confirm that input power is present and check that all cables are fully connected.
  3. Restart your unit by turning it off and on, raising its chlorine output level to 100%. Allow it to run at least 5 minutes before proceeding with troubleshooting diagnostics.

Common Questions

Q:Hello, I have just purchased the RJ Plus Salt system, and wanted to know it's power usage in Watts and Amps. Also, is it more efficient to connect it to 220v vs. 120v, and if so, how much more efficient? Whats the amperage & wattage for 220v vs. 120v connections? Thank you!

Asked by: Stefan - 2/10/2022
A: This model is rated for 180W (240V/0.75A or 120V/1.5A)

Q:Is it product partial to leave the unit powered 24-7 ? I recently purchased a variable speed pump which leaves the unit on displaying various lights…I realize the flow switch controls the Cell but I dont want to unnecessarily damage the unit by leaving it powered 24-7

Asked by: Barry - 2/9/2022
A: You would want to simply confirm that you see the "no flow" light come on when the pump stops, and go off within a minute or so when the pump starts. This is normal operation and does not damage the unit. For additional redundant control, you can also put the unit on a timer that is programmed to be in sync with the pump's programming.

Q:I bought the RJ -30 system and I would like to know if there is a way to tell if it is still putting out as much chlorine as it was designed to?

Asked by: Larry - 2/9/2022
A: Yes, the good news is that it is very easy to verify the system's operation, and there isn't a lot of gray area. Find your model's guide on www.circupool.com/help, and take a look at page 6 to see exactly how to verify that your system is working correctly. A salt system only needs salt in the water and power going through the cell. It is always checking for that to ensure it is creating the full and normal amount of chlorination. Remember that the other side of the equation is the water's chlorine demand - which is always changing. The guide will also help pinpoint some very common issues that can ultimately deplete measurable free chlorine to zero even with a fully functional chlorinator.

Q:I am getting ready to install this unit but may have to install it vertically. What, if anything, do I need to do to insure the system works properly? Thanks, Marty

Asked by: Martin Burke - 2/9/2022
A: The cell works just as well whether it is facing either direction, horizontal or vertical.

Q:What determines when your RJ+ Series "goes into its "REST Cycle"?

Asked by: Mike Blee - 2/9/2022
A: The chlorine output (power %) setting. The lower the power output, the less hard the system has to work to generate chlorine. The active / rest cycle is nothing that ever needs monitoring or consideration.

Q:What is the recommended GPM flow for the RJ45 system?

Asked by: Blaze - 2/9/2022
A: Salt chlorinators only need a minimum amount of flow in order to ensure that their cell stays filled with water during operation. Everyone's resulting flow rate is different depending on what model pump you have, and more importantly how much "total dynamic head" your setup has to resist flow.

Asked by: John - 2/9/2022

Q:I own this system but it sometimes does not produce enough chlorine for my 240 00 gallon pool, guess to runtime being less than 24 hours. can i upgrade to RJ 60 salt cell without changing controller? will controller recognize larger cell and correctly produce chlorine?

Asked by: Carlos Rita - 2/9/2022
A: Yes, it is "plug-and-play" to upgrade to the larger cell size. First, however, we recommend that you check this troubleshooting guide at the link below. High chlorine demand is a common issue in pools, and this guide will help you 1) verify your system is working normally, and 2) identify & fix common causes that require greater amounts of chlorination.
