Q: Is it product partial to leave the unit powered 24-7 ? I recently purchased a variable speed pump which leaves the unit on displaying various lights…I realize the flow switch controls the Cell but I dont want to unnecessarily damage the unit by leaving it powered 24-7

Asked by: Barry - 2/9/2022
A: You would want to simply confirm that you see the "no flow" light come on when the pump stops, and go off within a minute or so when the pump starts. This is normal operation and does not damage the unit. For additional redundant control, you can also put the unit on a timer that is programmed to be in sync with the pump's programming.

Q: I bought the RJ -30 system and I would like to know if there is a way to tell if it is still putting out as much chlorine as it was designed to?

Asked by: Larry - 2/9/2022
A: Yes, the good news is that it is very easy to verify the system's operation, and there isn't a lot of gray area. Find your model's guide on www.circupool.com/help, and take a look at page 6 to see exactly how to verify that your system is working correctly. A salt system only needs salt in the water and power going through the cell. It is always checking for that to ensure it is creating the full and normal amount of chlorination. Remember that the other side of the equation is the water's chlorine demand - which is always changing. The guide will also help pinpoint some very common issues that can ultimately deplete measurable free chlorine to zero even with a fully functional chlorinator.

Q: What determines when your RJ+ Series "goes into its "REST Cycle"?

Asked by: Mike Blee - 2/9/2022
A: The chlorine output (power %) setting. The lower the power output, the less hard the system has to work to generate chlorine. The active / rest cycle is nothing that ever needs monitoring or consideration.

Q: What is the recommended GPM flow for the RJ45 system?

Asked by: Blaze - 2/9/2022
A: Salt chlorinators only need a minimum amount of flow in order to ensure that their cell stays filled with water during operation. Everyone's resulting flow rate is different depending on what model pump you have, and more importantly how much "total dynamic head" your setup has to resist flow.

Q: I own this system but it sometimes does not produce enough chlorine for my 240 00 gallon pool, guess to runtime being less than 24 hours. can i upgrade to RJ 60 salt cell without changing controller? will controller recognize larger cell and correctly produce chlorine?

Asked by: Carlos Rita - 2/9/2022
A: Yes, it is "plug-and-play" to upgrade to the larger cell size. First, however, we recommend that you check this troubleshooting guide at the link below. High chlorine demand is a common issue in pools, and this guide will help you 1) verify your system is working normally, and 2) identify & fix common causes that require greater amounts of chlorination.

Q: Our GRC/J1400-3 chlorine generator has failed. Looking for a direct replacement so the pipes don't need to be changed. Is this model applicable? Thanks

Asked by: Nolan - 2/9/2022
A: Unfortunately there is not a unit that will be a direct replacement for your current plumbing with a Jandy/Zodiac Aquapure 1400. You may like the CORE series which has installation that can be done in as little as 10-15 minutes.

Q: I have the Circupool RJ 16. It says salt level is 2800 and really is 3600, How do you calibrate the unit?

Asked by: Rocky - 2/9/2022
A: You may just need to add salt to the pool. Measure your salt level, and if it is under 3000ppm follow the instructions in the manual to add salt. If your salt level is in range, then you are likely nearing the point where you will need to clean the cell. You can go ahead and follow the instructions in the manual to clean the cell. Salt systems will read low for one of those reasons, no calibration is necessary.

Q: Can the RJ series be run on a above ground pool? If so can it be run vertically similar to the same way the Hayward Aqutrol RJ model which ties connected directly to the return jet? Thanks for any info

Asked by: Jay - 2/9/2022
A: Yes, it is extremely common to use these on above ground pools. In fact, they come with unions for both 2" and 1.5" plumbing sizes so you should be covered. The system can be installed vertically or horizontally at any point between the filter's outflow and the pool return jet.

Q: Just purchased the RJ. Was told it is a self cleaning unit utilizing revers polarity. How do I know when it is in cleaning mode?

Asked by: Mark - 2/9/2022
A: The RJ models automatically reverse the polarity (change the direction of the electric current) in the cell every 200 minutes of operation. Its built in, so no action or monitoring is needed for this process. In the diagnostic menu, when the cell amps are shown with a negative sign, this indicates it is sending power in the other direction.

Q: Hi I have a 20,000 gallon pool pentair IC40 Salt Chlorinator right now and want to replace with the RJ30. I wanted to know if the RJ30 would fit the current plumbing exactly or would I have to do some re-piping?

Asked by: HY - 2/9/2022
A: The RJ is not meant to be a direct fit for an IntelliChlor. A few easy options for you would be the CORE Series or EDGE Series – all of which have available adapter kits which allow you to avoid replumbing.
The CORE series especially is a popular replacement, as it doesn’t require additional work to hook it up to power either.

Q: I have an RJ Plus system. What is the effect of Cell Version setting on the Menu? Each numerical value also has a '+' and '-'. What does this do to the operation of the system? This is not mentioned anywhere in the manual.

Asked by: Bob - 2/9/2022
A: You must have the correct cell version set as the actual cell you are using. The manual notes on page 10 "You may see a negative sign in front of some diagnostic numbers during normal operation. This is normal and indicates the system is on one of its two Reverse Polarity cycles." This is essentially only for diagnostic purposes and is not anything to monitor.

Q: What is the length of the RJ-Plus cell? Trying to figure out if it will fit or if I need the vertical install kit. Thanks.

Asked by: Bob - 2/9/2022
A: Good question. The cell itself is about 12.25", but with the plumbing unions and the flow switch, you'll likely want to give yourself about 20" to be safe. The format of the vertical install kit brings that "footprint" down to about 8"

Q: Recommended set up on RJ Plus on 22000 gallon pool. Variable speed pump. Pump run time and percentage setting. Thanks

Asked by: Tom - 2/9/2022
A: Every pool will have unique requirements based on your pool's chlorine demand and the amount of flow required in order to achieve enough circulation (turn-overs through your pool filter). The best approach is to make adjustments, measure the results, and then make further adjustments to the equipment if needed.

Q: I have a RJ-45 Plus Salt Generator. I don't know what the winter mode button actually does and what it's usefulness is. The owners manual really doesn't describe it's function or why it should or should not be used.

Asked by: Phil Puckett - 2/9/2022
A: It's simply a one-touch button to decrease your system's chlorine output. For example, this would be used if you have a spell of cold weather, a decrease in pool use, you cover the pool, etc... Otherwise, you would make gradual, incremental changes using the +/- output buttons as normal.

Q: Just received it, and so psyched to replace my 18 year old Aquarite, it looks great. Can I keep the old flow switch from that system that still works fine, or do I need to swap in the new one. Just looking for simplicity in the install. Thanks,

Asked by: Paul Rousseau - 2/9/2022
A: Basically, yes. You can just plug the old flow switch's "phone jack" connector into the new control module, or actually unscrew the old flow switch from the PVC fitting it's in and screw the new flow switch back into your plumbing.

Q: Do you offer extensions/adapters for the rj cell to connect to the power supply box? My power wall is about 6 feet farther than the provided cables length. Can I use a standard adapter to extend this?

Asked by: Scott - 2/9/2022
A: If you are able to do the wiring, you would just want to get more similar diameter cable from the hardware store and either a) connect it to the power cord in a junction box, or b) replace the cable from where it is connected inside the unit with a longer bit of cable. Obviously be sure to follow local codes.

Q: How often do you have to replace the salt cells? I see no mention of longevity

Asked by: Howard - 2/9/2022
A: Ultimately, cell lifespan depends on things like the size of your pool, how well it and your water chemistry has been maintained, how the salt system is used, etc; so it is unique for everyone. On average, it could be 5-8 years though again it could be more or less.

Q: We have a RJ 45 and a pool with just under 14,000 gal. Once Chem levels are achieved how much salt should need to be added to maintain them. It is an indoor pool.

Asked by: Wayne - 2/9/2022
A: Salt in the pool doesn't get consumed by the salt chlorinator, so after the initial amount that you add, it could be little to none if you have an indoor pool. Only when water gets drained/diluted would more salt need to be added to compensate for the salt that gets taken out with the water.

Q: Does this generator cell plug up with calcite quicker/more readily than the CORE? We have very hard water and very high temperatures,

Asked by: Galen L Marks - 2/10/2022
A: The rate of mineral scale build up is dependent on what is called the “Langelier Saturation Index” or LSI on your pool water chemistry report, which prevents excessive scaling; for most people regardless of model the cell should need to be cleaned every 4-8 weeks on average. More frequent scaling indicates a high LSI, and balancing that reduces the rate of scaling.

Q: Hello. I have an RJ-60+ which is rated at 300W, so presumably it only draws 1.36A at 220V. However, the manual also mentions the cell current ranging between 2.5 and 7.8 amps. I can also see the cell current displayed when I cycle through the menu options. For example, at 50%, it shows 5.7 amps. I'm assuming this cell current is different from the load on the circuit breaker. Can you confirm please?

Asked by: Monfresh - 2/10/2022
A: Right, you are thinking in the right direction. You are comparing the "input load" vs the "output load". The higher amps you are seeing on the unit's screen represent the low voltage flow of electricity from the Control Module to the Cell, not the draw at your power source.

Q: How do you calibrate the salinity on RJ30+? I installed an RJ30+ several months ago and it did well at first. Salinity readings were +/- 100/150 compared to local pool store. Now the salinity reading is 3630 on the RJ30+ and the pool store is showing 3000. At the pool store, they said the low chlorine output in seeing (1.26 ppm after 2 days of super chlorinate) my be due to the salinity on the RJ30+ controller needing to be calibrated, but I can't find any guidance in the documentation on how to calibrate it. The pool store believes that calibrating the controller will allow the RJ30+ to actually monitor the salt level and generate the correct level of chlorine without having to super chlorinate constantly.

Asked by: Tony M. - 9/12/2022
A: Unfortunately, the advice you were given is very inaccurate. There is no calibration required on your chlorine generator. It is entirely possible that it can read lower salinity levels as mineral scaling builds up in its cell; you'll eventually get a salt or cell warning light in this case and once the cell is cleaned it will go back to reading normal salinity levels. But a salt chlorine generator is unable to falsely read high salt levels unless its cell type has been inadvertently changed; simply confirm your cell type reads RJ+30. Ironically, testing equipment needs to be calibrated regularly. Take your water sample to 3 different testing locations and you can easily get 3 different readings. Regardless, if your unit is not displaying a warning light, it will continue to generate chlorine. You can verify your system's generation here: https://www.circupool.com/assets/doc/Low-Chlorine-Level-Troubleshooting--CircuPool-RJN.pdf

Q: My RJ 60 is not turning on, it has been less than approximately a year since purchased and I have not misused it, what should I do?

Asked by: Ferdinand - 10/24/2024
A: If your CircuPool RJ PLUS Series Salt Chlorinator will not power on, then you should first confirm that the unit is receiving power. With power reaching the Control Module (CM), you should then press in the Fuse Reset Button on the bottom of the CM. If the fuse can be reset, you will feel a distinct click. If not, the button will feel "loose" and not push in. If you are still unable to power on the CM, then you should cut power to the circuit. With the circuit off, remove the CM from the wall and remove the screws on the back of the CM. Open up the CM and replace the automotive-style, blade fuse. Restore power and determine if the CM will power on. If the CM powers up and the fuse blows, cut power again, unplug the salt cell, and replace the fuse. Restore power and after turning on the CM, wait several minutes to see if it will stay on. If you are unable to successfully power up the system, then call us weekdays at (888) 206-9938 between 9-4:30 Central and we can assist you from that point forward.

Q: I'm ready to connect from control module to the pump but wire colors from pump are black and red from module are black and white do I connect black with black and white to red. Green are ok. Please advise, thanks.

Asked by: Leonard - 10/24/2024
A: There are two issues here, the first being that the Control Module for your CircuPool RJ PLUS Series Salt Chlorinator should not draw power from the pump itself. Connect your RJ PLUS to a timer or to the pump circuit breaker.
The second issue is to recognize that in 220/240 volt configuration, while the green wire is Ground, both the Black and White leads are "hot."

Q: My RJ45plus is displaying 'cell connection'. it does not respond to any button on the control panel. will not even allow me to turn the unit off with the power button.

Asked by: Ted - 10/28/2024
A: Please note that you may normally see that message for the first couple of moments when the control box is first turned on. Beyond that, this error will be displayed when there is not a proper connection between the salt cell and the control box.
Performing these procedures once or twice will solve most connection issues. If for some reason an issue persists, please call tech support at 888-206-9938x2 and we can help you move forward if needed.

You will want to:
1) remove power from the controls,
2) fully disconnect the cell cord from the controls and inspect its male and female pins to ensure everything is intact,
3) reconnect the cell cord to the controls, making sure that the plug is correctly aligned, fully inserted, and fully seated down into the terminal, and that the plug's lock-ring is tightened down (hand-tight only), then
4) restore power to the controls.

If after a couple attempts of disconnecting and reconnecting your cell (while power is turned off) does not clear the message, make sure that there is no tension in the cell cord that may be pulling on the cell cord connection, and if necessary take the following additional steps to ensure there is not a damaged connection:

1) remove power from the controls,
2) disconnect the cell cord from the controls
3) on the controller’s cord terminal with the silver male pins, take a needle-nose pliers and gently pull on each pin to ensure it is fully extended. It is possible that during attempts to connect the cell cord one or all of these pins may have been pushed back into the body of the plug; a recessed pin will not create a full connection and cause the error message.
4) inspect the female terminals on the cell cord’s plug, ensure no dirt / debris / corrosion / etc… has filled any terminal hole, which may prevent a proper connection with the male pin that gets inserted. If any debris is present, clean out the terminal.
5) reconnect the cell cord to the controls, making sure that the plug is correctly aligned, fully inserted, and fully seated down into the terminal, and that the plug's lock-ring is tightened down (hand-tight only), then
6) restore power to the controls.

Q: I am looking to replace a failing pump motor with a new variable speed motor. I have an RJ-60+ unit and I am curious what the lowest pump RPM recommendation is to support the salt cell. I recognize that there will be a degree of trial and error to find the timing and chlorination settings when switching to this type of motor.

Asked by: Mike Burney - 10/29/2024
A: There are several key concepts to bear in mind regarding the upgrade to a Variable Speed Pump (VSP) for your Salt Chlorinated Pool.
The lower, energy-saving speeds available from a VSP introduce the possibility that some of the lower speeds speeds may be inadequate with a specific pool and its plumbing such that the waterflow is insufficient to fully deflect the Flow Switch. This can only be known with certainty once the equipment is installed and operating.
With respect to 'supporting the salt cell' and generating adequate chlorine, nothing changes. The same amount of chlorine is being produced and introduced to the pool over the same period of time regardless of which pump speed is being used. The pump speed only matters to the extent that it activates or fails to activate the Flow Switch.
If, like most VSP owners, you choose to improve the circulation and filtration of the pool by extending the pump's runtime - and still save electricity - then you will need to reduce the chlorine output level so that you don't over-chlorinate.
